If you are enamored with the idea of creating your own rose garden, you need to know what you are doing to make it stand out.
Planning Your Rose Garden
The first thing you need to begin your rose garden is put together a plan for where to place the garden, what plants will go in it, and all other pertinent logistics, so you know where to get started.
Take a walk around your yard to decide the best location for your garden. You want to select a spot that will get enough sunlight and water to help your plants thrive. But you also need to position it somewhere that you will be able to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of your roses.
Next, take some time to sketch a plan on paper of how your garden will look. Actually draw out which plants will go where so you know exactly what and how many to buy.
This is also a good way to make sure your plants will be in locations where they will be able to thrive. Roses need lots of water and at least five hours of daily sunlight to grow.
Finally, you should consider whether to plant your roses into the soil or onto a raised flower bed. Roses ideally should be planted into a raised bed because it provides them a better drainage system, not to mention better protection from weeds and pests.
Building a Raised Bed For Your Roses
When constructing your raised bed, be aware that a bigger and heavier flower bed will require stronger reinforcements. If your bed needs some extra reinforcement, you can place metal stakes into its walls to help stabilize it.
You can also place rebar into the ground beneath the soil of a raised bed to help keep the edging of your bed held in place. At least half the length of the rebar should be beneath ground level to ensure the walls of the raised bed are stable.
Picking Out, Picking Up, and Planting Your Roses
You should obtain your roses from a nursery or some other type of gardening store. The key point is to make sure your roses were grown out in a field and are at least two years old.
When the time comes to actually plant the roses, use the same kind of roses for each row. Additionally, organize the different colors and varieties of roses in a visually appealing way.
Your roses need to be planted into a pre-dug hole that is at least 6 inches deep and large enough to hold all the rose roots. Also consider placing rocks into the hole to improve the drainage of your plants.
Creating and maintaining a rose garden is a lot of work, but in the end you will wind up with a beautiful, gratifying garden.
