Lawyer

There is a good chance that at some point in everyone's life they will hire the services of a lawyer or someone who is trained in aspects of law in America. If a lawyer is in the courtroom prosecuting or defending a person he is called an advocate. If a client merely wants advice on a legal matter or guidance in how to proceed in a case the lawyer may be known as a legal advisor.

Although they all can represent their clients in court this is a very rare situation. Those lawyers who do specialize in courtroom procedure are called trial lawyers and require a more confident type of personality that is quick thinking. Being a trial lawyer is not all glamour though as a good deal of the work looking into the case itself with interviews, statements and evidence plus legal procedures to check and follow.

The law in all its guises affects every aspect of modern society and this is why lawyers are held in high regard but they must live up to this by living and working by a strict code of ethics. Whilst all lawyers are able to represent their clients in a courtroom it will depend on what area of specialization they are working in as to whether or not they actually do.

There are many areas where a lawyer can specialize from personal injury insurance to probate and even international laws. Lawyers who have decided to become experts in environmental law may be representing either side and this can mean working with environmental interest groups to large multinational waste companies or the EPA. It is not all glamour though as much of the work involves resolving land disputes, planning licenses and land administration.

A growing area for lawyers to focus on is the area of intellectual property rights which is generally an area that has grown from the use of digital products like music. Insurance companies also employ specialist lawyers who investigate the legality of insurance transactions, writing insurance policies to conform with the law and to protect companies from false claims.

However, the vast majority of lawyers work within the private sector where they can devote their energies to either criminal or civil law. In criminal law, lawyers represent individuals who have been charged with crimes and argue their cases in courts of law but with civil law, lawyers assist clients with litigation, wills, trusts, contracts, mortgages, titles, and leases.

Where there are high profile cases that may include law suits and the like you will find a different type of lawyer that specializes I the type of legal representation that affects the general public for instance. Still other lawyers look after those disadvantaged and less fortunate people around the world.
